The Dearborn, Michigan, and Metro Detroit Arab-American communities are mourning the tragic loss of Qasim Abbas Al-Khafaji, also known as Kassem AlKhafaji, who died in a workplace accident on Wednesday, July 1, 2026. He was 23 years old. His sudden passing has left his family, friends, coworkers, and community members grieving the loss of a young man remembered for his faith, kindness, and dedication to helping others.
According to the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office, the accident occurred at approximately 2:30 p.m. at a commercial construction site near the intersection of Grand River Avenue and Nicholson Road in Handy Township. Qasim was working in an excavation trench during the installation of underground storage tanks when the trench unexpectedly collapsed, trapping him beneath a large amount of soil. Coworkers immediately attempted to free him while sheriff’s deputies, firefighters, and emergency medical personnel responded to the scene.
After he was extricated from the trench, first responders performed lifesaving measures, but despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA), in coordination with local authorities, has opened an investigation into the incident. Officials are examining the circumstances surrounding the collapse, including whether appropriate trench safety measures were in place.
