Syracuse, New York | June 24, 2026 — What began as an ordinary evening between two best friends ended in a tragedy that has devastated two families and shaken an entire community.
On the night of June 24, 13-year-old Jonah Tanner and 16-year-old Damarion Jones were inside a home on Lincoln Avenue in Syracuse. Tragically, they would never leave.
At approximately 9:13 p.m., officers with the Syracuse Police Department responded to reports of gunfire at a residence on Lincoln Avenue. Upon arrival, they found both boys suffering from gunshot wounds.
According to investigators and William Fitzpatrick, authorities determined that Damarion Jones had accidentally discharged a 9mm handgun, striking his best friend, Jonah. In the immediate aftermath, overcome with grief and shock, Damarion is believed to have turned the gun on himself. He died at the scene.
Jonah was rushed to Upstate University Hospital in critical condition. Despite the efforts of medical professionals, he was later declared brain dead.
In an extraordinary act of generosity during unimaginable loss, Jonah’s family made the decision to donate his organs, offering hope and life to others in need.
Family members describe the two boys as inseparable—best friends who shared their lives, supported one another, and built a bond that those around them say was truly special.
Jonah is remembered as a vibrant young boy who loved football and fashion, with a personality that could light up any room. Damarion is remembered by his mother as kind-hearted, compassionate, and always willing to help others—a young man whose warmth touched everyone he met.
As the community grieves, residents of Syracuse have come together in support, holding prayer vigils to honor both boys. In a remarkable expression of unity and love, the Tanner and Jones families have announced plans for a joint funeral so the two best friends can be laid to rest side by side.
The tragedy has also reignited important conversations about youth access to unsecured firearms and the irreversible consequences that can occur in moments.
Two families who once watched their sons grow up together are now preparing to say goodbye together.
A single moment changed everything.
If firearms are present in a home, securely storing them where children and teenagers cannot access them can help prevent tragedies like this one.
