On the night of June 24, 13-year-old Jonah Tanner and 16-year-old Damarion Jones were inside a home on Lincoln Avenue in Syracuse. Tragically, they would never leave.
At approximately 9:13 p.m., officers with the Syracuse Police Department responded to reports of gunfire at a residence on Lincoln Avenue. Upon arrival, they found both boys suffering from gunshot wounds.
According to investigators and William Fitzpatrick, authorities determined that Damarion Jones had accidentally discharged a 9mm handgun, striking his best friend, Jonah. In the immediate aftermath, overcome with grief and shock, Damarion is believed to have turned the gun on himself. He died at the scene.
Jonah was rushed to Upstate University Hospital in critical condition. Despite the efforts of medical professionals, he was later declared brain dead.
