A serious multi-vehicle crash on southbound U.S. Highway 101 near Millbrae and San Francisco International Airport (SFO) led to major traffic disruptions and a large emergency response during the evening commute.
According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the collision occurred at approximately 7:00 p.m. near the Millbrae Avenue exit. Emergency crews, including police officers, firefighters, and paramedics, responded quickly to secure the scene, assist those involved, and manage traffic that rapidly backed up for miles.
Preliminary reports indicate that one of the vehicles involved overturned multiple times before coming to rest on the roadway. The driver was found with critical injuries and transported to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Authorities confirmed that the driver was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.
A second vehicle was involved in the incident, though officials reported no injuries to its occupants.
The crash had a significant impact on motorists traveling toward San Francisco International Airport and surrounding Peninsula communities. Several southbound lanes were temporarily closed as first responders worked to treat victims, remove damaged vehicles, and begin an initial investigation. Drivers were urged to use caution and consider alternate routes.
The California Highway Patrol continues to investigate the cause of the crash. Investigators are expected to review physical evidence, analyze traffic camera footage, and interview witnesses to determine what led to the collision. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether speed, impairment, or other factors contributed to the incident.
Traffic remained heavily congested for an extended period as crews worked to clear the scene and reopen lanes. Because Highway 101 is a major corridor connecting San Francisco, the Peninsula, Silicon Valley, and SFO, the disruption caused widespread delays across the region.
Further updates are expected as the investigation continues.
