It is with profound sorrow that family and friends announce the passing of Dennis James “DJ” Cox, who died unexpectedly on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, at the age of 33.
DJ’s passing leaves an immeasurable void in the lives of those who knew and loved him. He is remembered as a devoted husband, loving father, faithful servant, and respected professional whose warmth, integrity, and unwavering faith touched countless lives.
Born in Fresno, California, DJ was the son of Dennis Dean Cox and Kimberly Bidwell Cox. From an early age, he displayed intelligence, kindness, and a deep passion for learning. He graduated from Emerald High School in Greenwood, where he first cultivated his love for sports, leadership, and community service.
He continued his academic journey at the University of South Carolina, earning both his undergraduate degree and an MBA. His pursuit of excellence reflected his commitment to personal growth and his desire to make a meaningful impact in every area of his life.
Professionally, DJ built a distinguished career in the technology sector. He served as Associate Director of AI Strategy and Implementation at Yovant Technologies in Columbia, where his innovative thinking and leadership contributed significantly to the company’s success. Colleagues and clients alike respected him for his integrity, vision, and dedication.
A man of deep faith, DJ was a devoted member and Deacon of First Baptist Church of Columbia. He actively served his church community by leading men’s Bible studies, offering spiritual guidance, and inspiring others through his steadfast belief and compassionate spirit. His faith was the cornerstone of his life, shaping his relationships and guiding his actions.
Outside of his professional and spiritual life, DJ embraced his passions wholeheartedly. He was an avid supporter of the South Carolina Gamecocks and found joy in sports, including playing team tennis at the Lexington Tennis Center, where he was known for his camaraderie and friendly competitiveness. He also enjoyed woodworking, traveling, and spending quality time with family and friends.
DJ is survived by his loving wife, Anno Mills Polatty Cox; his cherished daughter, Mary-Elizabeth Cox; his parents, Dennis and Kim Cox of Greenwood; his grandparents, Judy and Skip Bidwell, and Velma Cox; his brother, Cory Cox, and sister-in-law, Jennifer, of Spartanburg; his niece, Lillian Cox; and nephews Garrett and Liam Cox. He is also survived by his mother- and father-in-law, Jean Ann and Keith Polatty of Greenwood. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Lillian Bidwell and David Cox.
A memorial service celebrating DJ’s life will be held at 1:00 PM on Monday, July 6, 2026, at First Baptist Church of Columbia, officiated by Rev. Wes Church. Friends and family are invited to gather in Ellis Hall immediately following the service to share memories and celebrate his life. A private graveside service will be held beforehand at Oakbrook Memorial Park in Greenwood.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial contributions be made to First Baptist Church of Columbia, 1306 Hampton Street, Columbia, SC 29201, in support of the church’s ongoing ministries and outreach efforts.
DJ’s life was a testament to faith, family, service, and leadership. Though his time was far too short, his legacy of love, kindness, and dedication will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
