Family, friends, and members of the Duduza community in Gauteng, South Africa, are mourning the tragic and deeply troubling death of Fikile Zulu, whose life was cut short under circumstances that continue to raise serious questions and concern.
According to reports, Fikile left her home in the evening to meet her boyfriend at a local pub in Duduza. Witnesses later stated that the two were seen arguing outside the establishment before allegedly getting into a vehicle together and leaving the area.
In the early hours of the following morning, at approximately 4:00 a.m., a motorist traveling along Tonkmeter Road, off the N17 freeway—more than 10 kilometers from Fikile’s home—struck a pedestrian. The driver immediately reported the incident to Springs police, and the victim’s body was transported to a government mortuary.
As Fikile’s family became increasingly concerned after being unable to reach her—her phone reportedly going straight to voicemail—they began searching hospitals, including Pholosong Hospital, and surrounding areas. Their fears were later confirmed when police contacted them regarding a body matching her description at the Springs mortuary.
Due to the severity of the injuries, particularly to the face and head, family members were unable to visually identify her remains. Fingerprint analysis was ultimately used to confirm that the deceased was indeed Fikile Zulu.
Her grandmother, Annah Zulu, and sister-in-law, Itumeleng Ndala, have since raised questions about how she ended up walking alone so far from home in the middle of the night. The boyfriend, who was reportedly the last person seen with her, has come under scrutiny.
Family members have alleged that he had a history of abuse, including a prior incident that left Fikile with visible injuries. They believe that following the argument, he may have abandoned her along the roadside, forcing her to make her way home on foot.
Reports indicate that the boyfriend has not been located since the incident, and the family has called for his immediate arrest and thorough questioning as part of the ongoing investigation.
Fikile’s grandmother shared that she had previously urged her granddaughter to leave the relationship, expressing fears that it could escalate into something more dangerous.
Authorities in Ekurhuleni, led by police spokesperson Captain Neldah Sekgobela, have confirmed that a case of culpable homicide is under investigation. As of the latest updates in July 2026, no arrests have been made, and the case remains open.
The tragedy has sparked an outpouring of grief and concern within the community, with many calling for justice and a deeper investigation into the circumstances surrounding Fikile’s death.
Fikile Zulu is remembered by her loved ones as a cherished family member whose life ended far too soon. As the investigation continues, her family remains steadfast in their pursuit of answers and accountability.
